  • Overview

    The Train Dispatcher is a full time position, responsible for working closely by communicating with train crew to safely and efficiently operate the Grand Canyon Railway’s train ensuring the safety of passengers, employees and the general public. 


    • Fully understand and support Xanterra Mission Statement and Core Values.
    • Issues, obtains/receives, relays and/or acts upon oral or written instructions/information from Trainmaster, Assistant Trainmaster, Roadmaster, Maintenance of Way, train crew or other personnel, in person or by communication devices (e.g., radio, fax machine, telephone, computer).
    • Moves on and off of stationary equipment and perform locomotive event recorder downloads.
    • Supervises and trains newly hired employees.
    • Follows company and federal safety rules, practices and procedures at all times, recognizes, reacts and reports safety hazards and rules violations to the proper management representative.
    • Maintains legible messages, instructions, forms and reports.
    • As the central communication point of contact for trains, maintenance of way, emergency services and law enforcement, the Dispatcher is required to maintain professional relationships and positive communication with all.
    • The Dispatcher may work as work train brakeman, passenger brakeman, diesel fireman, or other positions based on individual qualifications and staffing requirements.
    • Works with little or no direct supervision.
    • Other duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Must possess a valid and clear Arizona Driver’s License and comply GCR Special Instructions and the Xanterra/GCR Vehicle Policy.


    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Previous railroad experience as a dispatcher.
    • First Aid/CPR certification.


    Basic Competencies:

    • Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications--both general and technical)
    • Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)
    • Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills)
    • Mechanical aptitude


    Employment Conditions:

    • Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
    • Works safely and efficiently to ensure company equipment is safely secured at all times.
    • Wear protective equipment such as hard hat, hearing protection, safety-toe boots and safety glasses as required by the job duties.
    • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work
    • Complete annual training and pass safety rules examination
    • May require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol
    • Must pass all required assessments
    • May require a post-offer medical examination, including drug and physical capabilities test


    Environmental Conditions:

    • Work outside in all weather conditions, in confined spaces, and on occasion at elevated heights.
    • May be exposed to fumes and oils on a daily basis


    Physical Requirements:

    • Heavy work, lifting and pulling up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds on a rare basis
    • Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb on an occasional basis.
    • Walking long distances over uneven terrain
    • Must meet auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection thresholds.
    • Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor on an occasional basis.
    • Sitting for long periods of time.
