    Oversee day to day operation of all Grand Canyon South Rim Retail outlets including corporate liaison, daily sales, customer service, training & development, payroll, inventory control and merchandising for multiple high volume locations including Hermits Rest, Maswik Lodge, Bright Anel Lodge, El Tovar Hotel and Hopi House retail shops, as well as all ecommerce and related administrative duties for the department. The position works closely with the corporate retail group, including VP of Retail and corporate buying staff to ensure strong product flow and operational excellence. The position is integral part of Xanterra South Rim’s National Park Executive Team.


    1. Hands-on daily management of Xanterra South Rim Retail stores, Retail Distribution Center and online store activities.
    2. Execution of retail product placement strategies and planograms from an operational, inventory management and visual perspective.
    3. Lead, communicate and measure all KPI’s with the store management team to achieve financial plan goals, with a focus on revenue, cost of sales, labor, OPEX. Manages all development & documentation for direct reports.
    4. Create, implement and administer Retail department Policies and Procedures
    5. Manage and guide the activities of Store Managers, on-site Native American Buyer, Visual Display, and Trainer, to meet and exceed guest expectations.
    6. Maintain open and professional communications with corporate retail personnel, vendors and suppliers
    7. Responsible for creation of annual financial plan as well as annual capital plan for the Retail department.
    8. Develop and lead the retail guest service program.
    9. Lead the Loss Prevention efforts for the Retail Department ensuring proper controls and metrics are in place for all operations.
    10. Work closely with store managers and staff to meet all contractual requirements of Concession Agreement (NPS), ensuring timely management of initiatives and reporting.
    11. Work closely with Corporate Buying team ensuring product fits the Grand Canyon setting and store/Area themes, and meets the highest of quality standards. Supplement the inventory with local products including Native American Jewelry and crafts.
    12. Create opportunities for local product merchandising; including trunk shows, and signings for interpretive, interactive and educational purposes. Attend local/regional trade shows as required.
    13. Work closely with Retail Distribution Center Manager & Store Management teams to ensure products are shipped to stores in timely manner to maintain full inventory, and ensuring product is fully represented on sales floor.

    14. Work closely with Sales, Transportation and Food & Beverage departments and the Train, maximizing retail sales via group tours and day tour business.

    15. Responsible for conducting annual reviews of all salaried exempt personnel in the Retail department.

    16. Interview and select supervisory/management staff.

    17. Active on-site leadership and participation in Retail Capital projects working closely with Corporate Retail team as well as on site Engineering and NPS teams.

    18. Work closely with department trainer in developing and administering new training classes including guest service, developing knowledge of Native American Crafts and interpretive training on the history of Fred Harvey retail at the South Rim.

    19. Project a commitment to Xanterra South Rim’s environmental policies.

    20. Take over duties of property-wide Director on Duty as assigned.

    21. Other duties as assigned.


    1. Seven years minimum retail management experience in a high-volume, high-sales multi unit retail operation(s).
    2. Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Retail Merchandising, Marketing or equivalent field. Commensurate experience may substitute for some of the educational requirements.
    3. Excellent analytical skills regarding sales figures, COS, financial statements and purchase contracts.
    4. Excellent interpersonal skills to deal effectively with managers, staff, vendors, suppliers and National Park Service Concessions personnel.
    5. Excellent written, verbal and problem solving skills.
    6. Experience with Word and Excel software, plus computerized POS & Inventory Management systems, Guest Survey systems, Labor Management systems, hospitality systems.
