  • Overview

    Collecting and redistributing solid waste and recycled materials at all locations within the Oasis at Death Valley. This important position allows Xanterra employees to live their values by keeping materials out of landfills and helping sustain the planet for future generations.

    Responsibilities

    1. Comply with and help administer Xanterra’s environmental management system policies and procedures.
    2. Provide direct feedback to Department Managers on solid waste collection and recycling processes and performance using existing company guidance and a collaborative, educational approach.
    3. Initiate or attend departmental meetings and related communications to actively engage staff with trash collection tips, recycling tips, and basic support of diversion (and similar) programs implementation. 
    4. Work with Department Managers to ensure processing of trash and recyclables meets the standards of our vendors.
    5. Notify the appropriate waste or recycling vendor of material pick-up scheduling needs.
    6. Assure efficient collection of all trash and recyclable materials at all locations. These materials include, but are not limited to, solid waste, universal waste, hazardous waste, and other items).
    7. Sort recyclable materials from unrecyclable materials.
    8. Process all cardboard as applicable using baling equipment.
    9. Safe operation of cardboard balers and other equipment.
    10. Maintain all of the waste collection areas, recycling area(s), and satellite storage areas to sanitation and resource management standards.
    11. Responsible care of company vehicles and equipment including safe operation, compliance with all traffic and safety laws, assurance of company vehicle and equipment cleanliness, and daily maintenance and safety checks.
    12. Safe operation of all company and rental equipment in use, including not overriding any equipment safety features.
    1. Work with Engineering and Sustainability Departments to assess waste management opportunities, improve effectiveness of diversion program, and implement program changes as needed.
    2. Assist with other duties and programs as assigned, such as waste assessments and new program development and implementation.
    3. Work safely to avoid injuries and accidents, including the proper Personal Protective Equipment (mainly gloves and footwear).
    4. Maintain a diligent, positive attitude amid busy times,visitor conditions, and staff mentoring.
    5. When time permits, perform any and all assigned work orders issued by the Engineering Department.
    6. Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    1. Must have ability to work with minimum of supervision to complete assigned tasks in a safe, timely and professional manner. Note: this is a highly independent position that requires diligence to staying on schedule and on top of updates to our trash/landfill hauler, recycling hauler, and other waste management companies.
    2. Must be at least 21 years of age (could drive a vehicle over one ton).
    3. Possess a valid U.S. driver’s license with safe driving record and ability to operate 1-ton vehicle.
    4. Driver practice testing will be required once on location.
    5. Ability to operate a fork lift is required.
    6. Prior knowledge of or interest in learning waste management and overall park-wide environmental programs in order to serve as a resource for fellow employees and park visitors is preferred.
    7. Prior knowledge solid waste and recyclable materials, processing methods, and collection systems is preferred.
    8. Respiratory protection will be worn when required. OSHA standards require a clean-shaven face.

    1. Must be able to lift, push or pull bins with weights of 50-100 pounds on a daily basi

    2. Must be able to stand and bend throughout an 8 hour shift
