This a full time PM Carman postion. Under direction of PM General Foreman or Assistant PM General Foreman this position is responsible for switching railroad equipment (passenger cars, MOW equipment, & locomotives), performing: mechanical inspections, air brake tests, maintenance, repairs, and servicing. The PM Carman works predominately night (2nd) shifts; which may be without immediate supervision: and involved in the assembly and makeup of trains following established rules and procedures according to GCRy and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) rules and regulations.  This is a Covered Service position under the FRA Hours of Service regulation and subject to US Department of Transportation (DOT) and FRA Drug & Alcohol testing.


  • Fully understand and support Xanterra Mission Statement and Core Values.
  • Work safely and efficiently without injury to self, co-workers, passengers, or the public.  Work safely without causing damage to property or equipment.
  • Visually inspect machinery or equipment to determine if it meets minimum requirements of safety operation, and customer service levels.
  • Perform air brake tests as required by DOT-FRA, General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), and company rules.
  • Work as needed to facilitate switching railroad equipment.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on railroad equipment to maintain safety and proper operating standards.
  • Operate various designs of manual track switches and derails in order to change the route of railroad equipment.  Check switch points and derails to make sure switch or derail is properly aligned.
  • Observe/monitor track conditions such as broken rails, defective switches or signals, track obstructions, weather-related problems, etc.  Also observe/monitor railroad right-of-way, passing trains, vehicular traffic at crossings, position of switches, etc.
  • Comply with GCOR, train movement and switching instructions, train signals, and railroad rules and regulations to make-up and move railroad equipment.
  • Provide timely, accurate, and legible accounting of all hours for the Hours of Service record.
  • The PM Carman may work as work train brakeman, diesel fireman, steam fireman, dispatcher, or other positions based on individual qualifications and staffing requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Employment is contingent upon applicant’s ability to successfully pass GCOR class and certify Blue Signal class.
  • Employment is contingent upon applicant’s ability to walk trackside a distance of one mile continuously without stops within 15 minutes.

  • Must be willing and able to work scheduled shifts, days, evenings, weekends, and holidays; and overtime as required.
  • Must possess a valid and clear Arizona Driver’s License and comply with GCOR Operating Rules, GCR Special Instructions and the Xanterra/GCR Vehicle Policy.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to maintain flexibility in carrying out daily job duties, organize and manage priorities and tasks.
  • Ability to safely operate various powered equipment (pump truck, knuckle boom, or Skytrack) as assigned after qualifying as PM Carman.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English; communicate clearly with all levels of staff, passengers or the public especially relating to safety issues or when responding to emergency situations. Ability to read and understand written material, including equipment operating instructions, safety and first aid instructions, MSDS sheets and manufacturer’s manuals.
  • Good personal communication skills and also ability to communicate intelligently/professionally using a hand-held radio or hand signals.
  • Must have a means of communication to be able to be contacted for emergency work or schedule changes.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
