Yellowstone National Park employees not only work hard, they play hard, too. With over 2 million acres of land to explore, beautiful animals and half of the world’s thermal features you’ll never run out of exciting sights to discover! Our summer season positions typically run from mid-April through late October.


Yellowstone National Park Lodges runs lodging and restaurant operations at 6 different locations within the park, which are staffed by thousands of seasonal employees each year. The recreation department is responsible for planning and implementing employee activities, special events and trips for these employees, as well the rental of camping and hiking equipment.


Candidates interested in recreation department positions in Yellowstone are drawn to the unique opportunity to work in the world’s first national park and should be enthusiastic about Xanterra’s sustainability initiatives and mission to provide ‘legendary hospitality with a softer footprint’. Employees in the recreation department are not only highly knowledgeable about the layout and operations of their own location, but also possess a vast knowledge of the history and geography of Yellowstone as a whole. These individuals should be passionate about engaging others in community events, as well as exploring and learning about Yellowstone’s main attractions and extensive backcountry.





  • Follow all policy, procedures and service standards.
  • Develop and coordinate activities and trips to serve the interests of the community
  • Perform facility cleaning to include floors, bathrooms, equipment and more.
  • Operate the POS register system according to company guidelines.
  • Open and close the assigned Recreation building according to guidelines.
  • Facilitate trips of varying lengths, using assigned vehicles to transport participants.


  • Previous recreation experience or education preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Willing to work a variety of shifts and take overnight trips.
  • Previous experience and skill with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to work independently and provide direction to participants.
  • Knowledge and use of fitness equipment.
  • Must be able to obtain CPR/First Aid Certification and a DOT Medical card within a required time frame after hire.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and meet requirements as indicated in the company Vehicle Policy.
  • Must be able to stand/walk/reach/bend and lift at least 20 pounds frequently
