Overview

Xanterra Retail Buyers are responsible for managing retail store categories that are assigned by the VP of Retail and the Corporate Director of Retail. This includes sourcing, designing, buying, pricing, replenishing and controlling open-to-buy dollars, while maintaining planned COS and driving top-line revenue. Communicates with the stores and works closely with the corporate and store operations teams to build a cohesive and profitable product assortment. Builds strong relationships with the vendor community, Distribution Center managers, and store management teams while working collaboratively with other Buying team members to create strong merchandising programs. Ensures stores achieve a high in-stock percentage especially on key items by utilizing the Raymark system. Works closely with the Corporate Retail Director, Assistant Buyers, store operations teams and supply chain network for a well-timed, well planned assortment.

Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities:

 

  • Responsible for strategic category development, product development, selection, forecasting, purchasing and overall product management in assigned categories of merchandise. The position is responsible for assortment development & placement for resale in gift shops in and around the National Parks and other Xanterra properties.
  • Develops programs managing the timing/flow of product based on assortment plans and seasonal trends and executes entrance and exit strategies for assigned categories.
  • Utilizes the Raymark system (inventory management system) to prepare purchase orders for input and establish retail prices based on company margin and pricing strategies.
  • Assist Distribution Centers in monitoring distribution of product between D.C. and stores. Effectively monitor inventory, coordinate transfers and maintain adequate levels of inventory to ensure acceptable inventory turns.
  • Work closely with the corporate systems manager and Director of Merchandising in developing and analyzing reports used for controlling open-to-buy, replenishment, maintaining product flow and ensuring stores maintain high in-stock on all key items by size and color.
  • Work closely with vendors to negotiate best pricing, product design/development and understand current trends to keep assortments fresh and thematic within our stores.
  • Assist the retail support staff with merchandising, displays, signage, and sales driving techniques, staff motivation, and product information.
  • Travel to properties as required assisting support staff with store layouts, display standards, signage, and plan-o-grams that help create a thematic shopping experience, including specific story lines, educational and interpretive product lines for each location.
  • Attend industry trade shows for product sourcing purposes.
  • Maintain the integrity of the POS/Inventory Management System and ensure the stores are 100% in-stock.
  • Directly supervise, train & develop Assistant Buyer assigned to the position.
  • Provide leadership and direction to store managers and sales staff.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Corporate Retail Director and Vice President of Retail in analyzing sales reports and store priorities.
  • Stores on merchandising changes, product development and promotions.
  • Vendors on product development, pricing, and vendor supplied fixtures.
  • Directors and General Managers for store remodels and seasonal store openings
  • Managers on new fixtures, product placement, promotions, graphics, signage, and other store changes.
  • NPS/Clients on interpretive signage and thematic merchandising.
  • Business Development Team during the RFP process

  • Trade and Gift Shows
  • Vendors
  • All Xanterra properties
  • Seasonal Store openings
  • Travel can be up to 15-20% of work time and can include weekends, holidays, split shifts, and extra hours as needed.

Qualifications

Talents:

 

  • Excellent negotiation skills
  • Product design and development affinity
  • Inventory management knowledge and very strong analytical skills
  • Ability to process large amounts of data, filter and make decisions in a timely manner
  • Creative writing and the ability to articulate ideas and programs to specific audiences
  • Ability to know the marketplace spot trends and react accordingly

Work Skills and Knowledge Requirements:

 

  • Previous retail buying experience, preferably in a multiple outlet tourist and souvenir driven retail setting
  • Product development experience, working with both domestic and import supplier network
  • Previous store operations experience is a plus.
  • Experience working with the National Park Service or government agency a plus.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience of Microsoft Office including Excel advance functions
  • Experience working with Inventory Management Systems
  • Ability to make decisions, meet targets and work under pressure
  • Excellent business, planning, creative and organizational skills
  • Experience using auto replenishment models
  • Develop budget and merchandising assortments and plans
  • Ability to accomplish physical aspects of the position including moderate to heavy lifting, long periods of standing and bending, and the ascent/descent of ladders.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license.

Education and Experience Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of 5 years buying experience in multi-unit environment, including product development experience
