Stationed at the bottom of the Grand Canyon and 3/4mile north of the Colorado River, this position maintains the physical plant, equipment, and grounds of Phantom Ranch area ensuring the comfort and safety of our guests.



  • Perform all general maintenance duties on the Phantom Ranch property.
  • Responsible for preventive maintenance of all plumbing, electric, HVAC, laundry, fire detection and fire suppression systems and associated recordkeeping.
  • Servicing and maintenance of all on-site evaporative coolers, refrigeration and HVAC systems.
  • Maintain integrity and operation of all kitchen and laundry equipment.
  • Perform all minor electrical repairs as necessary.
  • Perform all minor plumbing repairs as necessary.
  • Overall maintenance of building structures through applied general carpentry, painting, rodent proofing, roof repairs and guests furnishings.
  • Maintenance of pumps and other motorized equipment.
  • Responsible for grounds maintenance.
  • Cleaning of ditches, removal of silt, rock and flotsam in order to maintain the irrigation system.
  • Regularly schedule watering of vegetation.
  • Responsible for compost program, which includes recycling matter from the Ranch kitchen, wood chips and manure to produce usable product for trail restoration and vegetation.
  • Work with Livery personnel in keeping barn and corral areas clean and organized in appearance.
  • Responsible for cleanliness of maintenance shop and yard.
  • Inventory management of plumbing electrical, heating/cooling, and carpentry and hardware replacement parts.
  • Maintain maintenance history of plant, equipment and grounds.
  • Work closely with and assist the Engineering Department on specialized repairs.
  • Adhere to all safety, Risk Management, OSHA, HAZMAT, HAZCOM and other company and NPS safety policies and procedures.
  • Follow all company and NPS established sustainability policies.
  • Follow all guidelines as described by the Engineering Maintenance Manager on repairs, renovations and remodels at Phantom Ranch.
  • Other duties as assigned. 


  • General knowledge of and experience with the construction trades such as carpentry, painting and general maintenance.
  • General knowledge of and experience in the mechanical trades such as plumbing, laundry mechanics, and electrical.
  • Experience in refrigeration and heating/cooling repair and maintenance. HVAC certification desired, or ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to establish and follow a preventive maintenance program.
  • Proven maintenance troubleshooting and repair skills.
  • Ability to work without close supervision and complete multi-tasking assignments.
  • Willingness to be called out for emergency repairs at any time while on Ranch property during regularly scheduled workdays.
  • Physical ability to hike from the Ranch to the Rim under own power.
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures particularly in the summer months.
